As our post in September informed readers, there is significant disruption to the global shipping lines services. What we are seeing now is substantial port congestion in the UK and at other global transhipment ports which is severely impacting container movements.
This has been caused by a wide variety of factors, but here in the UK it is exacerbated by 90,000+ HGV driver shortage further increasing delays and increasing port costs. Containers cannot be moved out of the port fast enough and after the 5-day rent free period in a port, charges are then incurred at between £100 to £150 per day.
Some advice to consider
In conjunction with our Shipping and Removals partners, Pickfords, here is some practical advice to consider:
- As an Assignee, be flexible with your travel plans and understand that your consignment may take longer
- You need to recognise that quoted prices may well change at the last minute as events unfold and additional costs fall outside the shippers control. Your budget should be flexible too
- Make sure that your Customs Clearance paperwork is completed as swiftly as possible to avoid any delays
- Consider storage with your removal company if you are unable to accept goods at short notice. Storage is an additional cost but it is cheaper than Port Rent
- Build a contingency plan in case the consignment is late. Contact your HCR Relocation Consultant and consider alternative accommodation or increasing the time you may spend in your interim accommodation. It might be prudent to hire furniture in for the short-term or as alternative to shipping your household for your assignment
